Stimulation Talk: Current Status Of 5G Rollouts In Regard To 4G Evolution

Quo vadis 5G? The 5G rollout is an evolutionary process—think of it not as a destination but a journey or like a marathon.

5G is more than just a further technological leap for the network of the future. The future mobile communications standard and successor to LTE Advanced will make the mobile communications network more powerful than ever before.

And the new 5G standard will enable Industry 4.0 and new business models. 5G is seen by the industry as an important building block and key success factor to realize Industry 4.0. Companies will have the possibility to build their own private 5G campus networks. The German regulation authority will provide a local 100MHz frequency band for applications e.g. in industry campus areas.

Higher flexibility, efficiency and high reliability are main drivers to apply 5G in industrial production and processes. These were also key results of a qualitative survey called 5G campus networks in the industry conducted by Detecon in cooperation with the University of Regensburg.

Abstract 2 (Day 2, Session 1)

Migration Options For 5G Rollouts

So much has happened over the last year related to 5G!

5G has been launched this summer and is now operational by the 1st operators in Germany. Could you imagine this one year ago? A key milestone was that the frequencies have been auctioned for 6,6bn Euros by the German government.

5G is more than just a further technological leap for the network of the future. The future mobile communications standard and successor to LTE Advanced will make the mobile communications network more powerful than ever before.

But Quo vadis 5G? The 5G rollout will be an evolutionary process—think of it not as a destination but a journey or a marathon.

However, operators should not wait until the marketplace shakes out—that just gives competitors the first-mover advantage. The winning strategy is to act NOW. By carefully investing in upgrades to support specific 5G use cases, network operators can monetize their near-term investments and at the same time modernize the existing infrastructure in preparation for the eventual migration to a full 5G architecture.
