Evaluation of HbbTV SDKs

Hybrid broadcast broadband TV (HbbTV) is a global initiative aimed at harmonising the broadcast and broadband delivery of entertainment services to consumers through connected TVs, set-top boxes and multiscreen devices. There are already existing open source and proprietary tools and frameworks for developing HbbTV applications.


Your tasks:

Your task in the project is to identify existing HbbTV SDKS and frameworks and evaluate them. For evaluation, an HbbTV application will be developed using each SDK and tested on HbbTV TVs according different metrics which also need to be identified in the project. A list of existing HbbTV SDKs is available below in related technologies but not limited to it.

Synchronization of application with broadcast TV

Student Project

Sync an HbbTV application with a broadcast quiz.

Your tasks:

The task involves using a synchronization framework and providing a plug-in for a WordPress based HbbTV application editor.

The goal is to provide a plug-in for to the open source HbbTV tool MPAT (based on WordPress) to allow TV viewers to play along with the RBB quiz show "Jede Antwort zählt!". Multiple choice questions shall be presented to the viewer in sync with the TV programme (independent of transmission method, i.e. satellite, terrestrial, cable, IP) and allow viewers to provide answers only until the correct answer is revealed in the program. An additional sync point is when the in-studio players “log in” their answer.

The work includes the provision of a backend for editors on the broadcaster side to provide questions and answer alternatives in a user-friendly way.

Smart TV Learning Portal

Student Project 

Digital adaptive learning platforms become more and more important for education: no matter if in school, at universities, on-the-job trainings or in public educational centers, learners often have additional duties and, thus, limited time for knowledge acquisition. That is why they tend to learn in between other activities – anywhere and anytime. Efficient content access and the selection of appropriate media is crucial for a sustainable motivation and the successful achievement of course goals.

Fraunhofer FOKUS developed an infrastructure that satisfies the needs of both, learners and pedagogical staff. Participants of workshops, blended learning courses or online trainings get adaptive access to interactive course materials on various devices (e.g. smartphones, tablets, laptops, computers and even Smart TVs) via a centralized platform. However, the contents are totally interoperable, reusable and independent from a specific Learning Management System (LMS), as their representation consequently follows open specifications, such as ADL Sharable Content Object Reference Model (SCORM) or IMS Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI).


Your tasks:

Your task is to develop an application that allows students (e.g. of the AWT course) to learn directly on a SmartTV. Thereby, students shall be able to access and interact with the learning material offered in the Smart Learning Portal. You can focus on different aspects, for example:

  • Automatic discovery and launch of contents from the mobile app to the TV (and vice versa)  seamless learning experience
  • Display of learning media (texts, animations, PDFs, videos etc.)
  • Presentation of interactive Quizzes
  • Use the TV to show Push-Notifications and learning reminders
