5G-VICTORI is an EU funded project that comprises 25 partners from eight European countries. It addresses the European objective of providing 5G solutions for verticals. This requires developing 5G infrastructures that address a wide range of applications adopting flexible architectures, offering converged services across heterogeneous technology domains with unified software control. The project will utilize and adapt existing infrastructures towards integration of a large variety of vertical and cross-vertical use cases – such as large scale trials for Railway, Energy, Media and Factories of the Future.

Fraunhofer FOKUS business unit FAME is co-leading the work package coordinating the trials at the four platform sites. FAME also leads the activities at the Berlin platform site (based on 5GENESIS), which performs three trials. These trials are “Media: CDN services in dense, static and mobile environments”, “Rail critical services” and ”Future Mobility”.

In the first scenario, working together with Deutsche Bahn (DB), RBB und IRT a new technology will be developed, which enables the uninterrupted play of videos in the Mediathek (a video catch-up services operated by German public broadcasters) during train journeys. The trial will allow viewers to continue watching videos during a train journey even in areas with limited mobile data coverage by using a “data shower” concept, providing the most requested videos to a CDN in the train by rapid pre-streaming over 5G at stations.

In the second scenario, also realized with Deutsche Bahn, we will demonstrate the provisioning of rail critical services such as the turnout control via 5G technologies. Currently the rail signaling and control infrastructure is based on cable based transmissions, which are vulnerable to accidents and intentional attacks. In the past, various cases of malicious arson, for example in Berlin and Munich, have caused significant interruptions in train traffic. The planned trial will use 5G based communication to show that the provided QoS, especially in the area of low latency and reliability, is sufficient to provide rail critical services at, minimally, the same level as current cable based solutions.

The third scenario to be realized in the Berlin testbed is the development of a Mobility as a Service (MaaS) framework providing Door-to-Door services for passenger adopting sustainable transport modes is planned. The challenge her is to provide a service to a large group of passengers arriving at a station and connect them with various transport options to reach their destinations. From a technical point of view, this requires handling a large number of users and devices in a very short time frame, taking individual preferences and requirements into account, while also providing a coordinated matching to the transport options available at the station at that moment (number of taxis, care shares, rental bikes, rental scooters, and scheduled services such as bus and local train connections)

5G-VICTORI is part of the 5G Infrastructure Public Private Partnership (5G-PPP), the joint initiative of the European information and communications industry. The initial goal of this organization was to specify the requirements for the next generation of communications networks and services. Subsequently. at this stage of 5G development, the 5G-PPP Projects are expected to execute large field trials for testing and verifying the performance of 5G technologies in operational environments.
