Successful project closure for webinos
News from Feb. 17, 2014
The project partners were satisfied due to the positive feedback for their three-year work expressed by the experts from the European Commission last week. In future the webinos-technology shall be further integrated into industry or science products thus connecting devices via open standards - independently of the producer. In November 2013 the webinos foundation was founded to promote webinos as an application platform. The final evaluation results will be presented next week.
Due to the omnipresent and mobile use of the internet, the need to provide web applications not only on smart phones, but also cross-platform and independently of producers increases – no matter whether on a television, computer or with onboard units in a car. In order to develop such a universal platform for allround applications well-known partners from science and industry decided to co-operate in the “Secure Web Operating System Application Delivery System” (Webinos) project in September 2010.
On the 13th and 14th February the project partners presented their final results at Fraunhofer FOKUS and were throughout assessed positively by the EU experts. Encouraged by the assessment the partners from industry and science want to integrate the webinos-technology in their own products. “Webinos is a milestone. Our aim is to create a secure open source web platform for running applications on and across multiple devices and to bring forward the development of interoperable solutions”, said the project manager Dr. Stephan Steglich from Fraunhofer FOKUS.
The webinos-technology that is also called “the browser of the next generation” connects different devices through a secure, personal cloud and adds a highly efficient programming interface. Thus a seamless broadcasting of data on all devices is possible. Webinos accedes to the needs of the IT-industry that aims to implement an easy integration of internet offers into their products. The open-source approach simplifies the co-operation of several actors and prevents a fragmentation of the market. At the same time the use of commercial products with many interfaces becomes easier.
The Fraunhofer FOKUS competence center FAME ventures on webinos in the future. The integration into the developers platform FAMIUM makes it possible to play live video streams simultaneously on several devices, so that video content can be enjoyed seamlessly across several mobile and internet devices, including networked TV sets. The technology makes it easier to develop and stream media – and to synchronize and protect content – across different platforms.
The project webinos (Secure Web Operating System Application Delivery Environment) aims to provide a platform for web applications that simultaneously suits mobile devices, PCs, home media (TV) and in-car-units. All software is available under the Apache 2.0 license.
