High-level visitors from East Africa
News from May 24, 2012
Against the backdrop of a changing research landscape in Kenya, researchers of Fraunhofer FOKUS informed the visitors about application-oriented research in Germany and international cooperations between industry and science. As an example of successful German-African research cooperation, Fraunhofer FOKUS presented the project NET4DC which aims at facilitating access to global communications infrastructure and services in rural areas - especially in emerging and developing countries. Another topic of great interest for the African visitors was the Berlin OpenData project, since the Kenyan government launched the Kenyan Open Data Initiative in 2011. Both initiatives try to enable citizens to get access to public data, for example from public authorities, via IT portals. Further subject of discussion were the project OpenMTC with its focus on an M2M (machine-to-machine)-Communications-platform and the UNIFI initiative aiming at building sustainable teaching and research infrastructures in the areas of Future Internet.
