Dr. Konstantinos LIOLIS is Senior Systems Engineer within SES Networks, managing R&D and Innovation projects on Satellite Communications technologies, such as 5G, M2M/IoT and HTS. He has over 13 years of experience, both technical and managerial, in more than 35 contracted EU FP7/H2020, ESA ARTES and National R&D and Innovation projects in ICT with major focus on Satellite Communications. Prior to joining SES in 2012, he was R&D Project Manager at Space Hellas S.A., Greece in 2008-2012, Communication Systems Engineer at ESA/ESTEC, the Netherlands in 2006-2008, and Research Assistant at the California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology, San Diego, USA in 2004-2006. He has more than 50 journal, conference and book chapter publications as well as several contributions to ETSI, DVB and ITU-R standardization bodies. He holds the PhD and Dipl.-Eng. degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), Greece, and the MSc degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of California at San Diego (UCSD), USA. He is a Member of the Technical Chamber of Greece and is PMI PMP® certified project manager.

Abstract

The GEO/MEO Operator's Perspective

This talk will consist of five parts. First a few words about SES, then about 5G, before entering into the heart of the presentation: satellite’s role within 5G. Then the SES’s activities in this area will be briefly presented, before concluding. As part of the heart of this presentation, the following points will be elaborated: Satellite Can Support the Key Usage Scenarios for 5G, Satellite’s Roles in the 5G Ecosystem, Four Satellite “Sweet Spots” in the 5G Ecosystem, and Satellites Can Even Help Achieve Sub-1ms Latency. As part of SES’s activities in the area of satellite integration within 5G, the European Commission H2020 5G PPP Phase 2 project SaT5G and the European Space Agency ARTES Advanced Technology project SATis5 will be overviewed as well as the recently announced SES’s investment into a major new satellite innovation, the Multi-Terabit O3b mPOWER network.
