5G-Ready Trial Platform
June 01, 2016 to Feb. 28, 2017
The 5G-ready Trial Platform is one of two projects of the Fraunhofer-Institutes FOKUS and HHI. It will provide 5G mobile and network technologies for the 5G Test Field Initiative of the Berlin senate for economics, technology and research.
5G is often equated to the introduction of new and more efficient radio access technologies and transmission methods. The biggest changes however will have to be in the area of the core network technologies, in order to meet the requirements of the coming 5G applications with regard to broadband, availability, latency and device density.
Therefore this project will concentrate on providing network technologies and enable the integration of new 5G radio concepts with modern data center technologies, distributed network functions and software-based networks by using cloud and edge technologies. Furthermore the platform will support the demonstration and evaluation of general 5G technologies and applications, in particular in the form of a technology readiness assessment.
The architecture allows for continuous and sustainable expansion for distributed locations to execute experiments and demonstrations at various locations within the metropolitan area. Furthermore it provides functions for the formal evaluation of the development status on 5G platform and use case technologies with regard to the future implementation under operative conditions.
Likewise the platform is construed as a test environment for the future use by third parties, for example to enable small and medium sized companies the easy access to 5G technology in the development of their own technologies and business models.
