FOKUS opens new dependence in Chile

News from Oct. 04, 2012

On October 1st the German Federal Minister of Education and Research, Annette Schavan, and the Chilean Minister of Economy, Pablo Longueira, opened the new office for Smart City Solutions „FOKUS InnoCity“ in Santiago de Chile. With the new research center FOKUS is collaborating with South American representatives from industry, politics and science to develop Smart City solutions for the region. In parallel to successfully realized concepts and projects in Germany, FOKUS InnoCity now wants to create intelligent, secure and interoperable solutions for modern metropolises in South America.

FOKUS InnoCity's key subject will be the creation of IT solutions for modern cities. As for Chile Fraunhofer so far was only present in the field of biotechnology, InnoCity will now expand Fraunhofer Chiles’ existing range of scientific research by the field of IT, as a part of the Fraunhofer Chile Research Foundation. In the new dependence, FOKUS and national partners will develop IT concepts in order to improve not just transport and mobility, but also health, public (IT) security, e-government and protection against natural disasters in Chile. That way new ICT technologies shall not just help to enhance the quality of life in South America but also support the economic recovery. Furthermore, InnoCity will provide consultancy services for IT-based solutions in urban areas.

FOKUS is happy to cooperate once more with Bundesdruckerei GmbH that will also contribute its expertise in the field of secure identities in Chile. As FOKUS InnoCity’s first partner Bundesdruckerei will support the office, so that digital identities are optimally protected and efficiently integrated into South America’s Smarty City solutions.
