Joanna Balcerzak works for Orange Labs in France, as an E2E architect in QoS domain and project manager in interoperability domain. Joanna received her M.Sc. , Eng. degree in Computer Science. She is Orange delegate in ETSI TC INT. She is also contributing to NGMN via the 5GTTI (5G Trial & Testing Initiative). Joanna authored several papers in QoS and QoE domains. Joanna Balcerzak is also contributing to SliceNet project.

H2020 SliceNet Project in a Nutshell

The SliceNet (End-to-End Cognitive Network Slicing and Slice Management Framework in Virtualised Multi-Domain, Multi-Tenant 5G Networks) project is funded by the EU Commission under the H2020 programme. The project is developing a framework for 5G network slicing consisting of managed domains using network softwarization and slicing to improve network services for service providers, operators and consumers.

SLICENET will experiment with three use-cases covering different vertical areas:

  • The 5G Smart Grid Self-Healing Use Case, which will increase automation in power distribution with self-healing solutions towards a smarter grid;
  • The 5G eHealth Smart / Connected Ambulance Use Case, which will advance the emergency ambulance services using the ambulance as a connection hub (or mobile edge) for the emergency medical equipment and wearables;
  • and the 5G Smart City Use Case, which will implement remote water metering and the Intelligent Public Lighting system and access the various technical and operational KPIs.

This presentation will focus on an overview of the project and its objectives. Highlighted key areas are network slice-based services, driven by the Quality of Experience (QoE).

NGMN 5G Trial & Testing Initiative in a Nutshell

The objective of Next Generation Mobile Networks 5G Trial & Testing Initiative (TTI) is to facilitate the maturity of the technology and assure an early interoperability of the products.

The TTI consists of four phases:

  • Tests of technology building blocks (e. g. Massive MIMO, new waveforms…) and possible pre-5G tests the member companies may be individually conducting during the pre-5G deployment period.
  • Proof of concept (PoC) of the basic features of the radio interface, core network and 5G architectural components. The PoC may be performed using solutions which may be partially proprietary; however, this phase necessitates using the basic concepts of the 5G radio interface as specified by the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP).
  • Interoperability phase(IOT) which includes testing of the network aspects and device/network interoperability.
  • Pre-commercial networks trials with equipment close to the commercial ones. This phase focuses on the initial planning phase (including test specifications), followed by the actual trials (with pre-commercial equipment installed on sites).

This presentation will focus on an overview of the NGMN 5G TTI. Highlighted key area is the interoperability phase, where the main goal is to test interoperability of various equipment and interfaces in a realistic and heterogeneous environment.
