The purpose of the MSNI project (Mobile Semantic Navigation and Information) is to help regional companies develop innovative content applications for the mobile market. A research network is consolidating current research and development activities in the field of intelligent and semantic technologies from which sustainable business models can be extrapolated for the mobile market. The project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research as part of the Growth Core Potential Initiative.

A demonstrator developed by the project provides an initial impression of the technical potential. It combines aerial photographs, interactive 3-D views and off-road-capable routing components with navigation optimized for mobile devices. Additional content from companies in the Berlin-Brandenburg region will gradually be integrated via open interfaces and supplied to users whose interests/situation profile it matches. The strong regional link ensures a high level of quality assurance, which means that (unlike with many search engines) no outdated, irrelevant or inaccurate information is sent to the device. To enable people from different cultural backgrounds to use the services, a number of language and operational options are available to users.
